Week 7 Term 3 2019

A very special message from Mrs Barclay

Today was a truly yellow day as the whole community followed the suggestion from the Parr family to raise funds for the Daffodil Day Appeal. Thank you for your support and generosity. Next week, we will know how much was raised and share it with you. I visited Mrs Barclay again on the weekend and she is doing really well. Here is a very special message from her for you all. Let's continue to keep Michelle and Ricky in our prayers.

To our wonderful St Patrick's community,

I want to pass on my heartfelt thanks for all of the messages of support, love and prayers that have been coming my way over the last two months. It has certainly been a journey but with all your positive thoughts, I have truly felt the power and strength behind all your well wishes.

Thank you to the classes who have made cards and videos... they brighten up my day. It was so wonderful to read each and every card and receive personal messages, and my family and I loved watching the class video clip put together by the Yr6s. Thank you kids!

To the families and staff who have been supporting my family with meals, we are so grateful. From pasta dishes, casseroles, pies and sausage rolls, cakes, slices, muesli bars, fresh food, etc.... my kids' lunchboxes have never looked so good! It has made the day to day routine so much easier... thank you!

As you know, August is the Cancer Council's Daffodil Appeal month. I know many of you have supported this cause today by dressing up in yellow and donating to the Cancer Council. Thank you for supporting this appeal.

Once again, we have been overwhelmed by the generosity of the St Pat's community and know how lucky we are to be a part of it. It truly is a special feeling to know that there's so much support and strength behind us.

With love (and sunshine!)

Michelle Barclay

Special Focus Review
During the week, Mary Wilson (world class international educator and facilitator) spent a few days with the Leadership team, staff and students reviewing our school implementation of practices, especially in relation to our core values. Mary was accompanied by Maree Holmes, a representative from Catholic Education Melbourne. Both of them were very impressed with the impact our practices are having on the well being of our community and we look forward to sharing the review report with you in the coming weeks. A HUGE thanks to our very capable Leadership team who helped the process to be such a success. On Monday, I will meet with the VRQA auditor who will complete the compliance part of the review. These school reviews happen once every four years and the outcomes contribute to our School Improvement plan going forward.

Some of our students were interviewed by the reviewers.
Father's Day THANK YOU
Some of our mums helping at the Father's Day stall
Thanks to the wonderful teams of mums who helped prepare the Year 6 Father's Day breakfast and the Father's Day gift stall today. So many of our parents work hard behind the scenes to ensure our children and families are cared for. We wish all fathers and grandfathers a very special Father's Day on Sunday.
The wonderful mums who prepared the delicious Year 6 Father's Day breakfast

Reminder no lunch orders this Monday 02/09/19.
They will be back on Wednesday.

Oh what a night!
Thanks to everyone who helped with, and came along to the 80s School Formal last Saturday. Everyone got into the spirit of the night, with cummerbunds, satin frocks and (very!) high hair as far as the eye could see!

Everyone’s generosity in buying raffle tickets and bidding on the auction items is so gratefully appreciated. The final figure we raised is still a work in progress - we’ll let you know when we have it.
A big congratulations to the Grade 4 parents. You’ve won the $150 Wolf and Malone voucher for having the most parents there on the night.
Finally, thank you to Jellis Craig for their support of the 80s School Formal. Not only did they donate vouchers, Chris Ari also donated their time on the night, with Ari conducting our auction. And despite losing power at the exact moment the auction began, he did an amazing job.

Here is a link to the policy.  Please read it and talk about it with your children.
The Working With Children Check WWCC Policy has been updated and is available to read on the Learning Community Site. You can access it at this link. Please contact principal@spmurrumbeena.catholic.edu.au if you wish to discuss this further.

Daffodil Day 30th August
Eliza, Tessa and Millie talking at assembly
The Parr girls shared more about Daffodil with the school community at assembly on Monday. Here is the information they shared.

Daffodil Day is The Cancer Council’s most iconic and much loved annual campaign that raises life-saving funds for world class cancer research.

It is celebrated on Friday 23rd August and it’s a time of hope; where people come together to show their support for the 145,000 Australians that are diagnosed with cancer each year and its theme is Yellow – which symbolises HOPE

When we found out that Mrs Barclay and Ricky in 2 O were diagnosed with cancer, we wrote a letter to Ms Hawkins asking if our school could join thousands of others across the country this August to raise funds for this cause that not only gives hope but also saves lives and of course Ms Hawkins agreed.
So how can we help show our support? It’s easy!

On Friday 30th August we are asking that everyone comes dressed in something yellow and to bring a Gold Coin to donate to the cause. Remember Friday is still our normal sports day so runners are still a must. You could wear a bright Yellow Ribbon in your hair, a yellow top or yellow socks but the more yellow, the better.

We hope everyone gets involved as the money we raise will go towards research to saving lives, making treatment less invasive and hopefully one day finding a cure.

So we hope everyone gets on board!

We would like to finish with a small video clip and thank you for listening.

Congratulations
Congratulations to Aleks from Prep Y for receiving a special trophy from the P&F. Aleks raised over $1000 for our Colour Run this year. Such a huge effort from Alecks and his family.

Week 4, Term 3 2019

Assumption Mass Thursday 15 August
On Thursday15 August the Church celebrates the Feast Day of the Assumption of Our Lady when according to our faith, the Holy Mother, “having completed her course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory”.

Although defined as an article of faith by Pope Pius XII just over half a century ago, the Assumption of Our Lady into heaven has been accepted from back to the earliest of Christian times.

Our schoolchildren will attend mass at 9:10am on Thursday and parents are welcome to join us for this holy day of obligation. In the Catholic Church, holy days of obligation (also called holydays, holidays, or days of obligation) are days on which the faithful are expected to attend Mass.

HOLY DAYS OF OBLIGATION IN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH
January 1: The Feast of Mary, the Mother of God.
40 days after Easter Sunday: Ascension Thursday.
August 15: Assumption of Mary into heaven.
November 1: All Saints' Day.
December 8: The Feast of the Immaculate Conception.
December 25: Christmas, the Nativity of Our Lord.

Thanks to all of the parents, staff and Year 4 children who attended the workshops on Wednesday evening. The children are preparing to make the sacrament of the eucharist for the first time on Sunday 15th September. Please keep the children in your prayers.

Mary with Baby Jesus
Each classroom received a Mother and Child icon for their prayer tables from Assisi in Italy. This beautiful icon reminds of the precious and nourishing love between a parent and their children.

Hail Mary, Full of Grace, The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now, and at the hour of death. Glory Be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

Social Justice Statement 2019–2020 Making it Real: Genuine human encounter in our digital world

Part of our Catholic mission as educators and parents is to ensure our children learn to use and navigate the digital world safely.

Whilst in Rome, we were directed to the inspiring work of our very own Australian Bishops who work together to address issues of national significance. Every year they release a social justice statement and resources to support further action across our schools and parishes. Here is an extract from their statement for 2019. The Statement is a response to Pope Francis's call to 'boldly become citizens of the digital world' and to ensure it is a place of human encounter.

....The 2019–2020 Statement, titled Making it Real: Genuine human encounter in our digital world, considers the great changes that modern communications technology has brought to our lives. It has revolutionised the way we communicate, work and learn, do business and socialise. Here in Australia over 20 million people are on the internet and 18 million are using social media. For us as Church, there are so many new opportunities to share the Good News of Christ, to bring communities together and to reach out to people in need....

For all these advances, however, there are some serious challenges. The Statement highlights how the dignity of vulnerable people is harmed by online bullying and exploitation. The common good is compromised where certain groups are excluded from the benefits of technology. People’s privacy has been undermined when personal data has been appropriated for financial gain. The solidarity of entire communities can be placed at risk by campaigns of misinformation and the spread of ‘fake news....

Here is a link to the Archbishop's letter and a Summary of the document.

Part of our education as an e-Smart school is to give our children the skills to be safe and confident digital citizens. We will be sharing more from this focus in the coming months including ways you as parents can support your children.
