Community Update #2.6

First Eucharist

The Year 5 children will be making their First Eucharist this Saturday morning in the church. Please keep them in your prayers as they celebrate this sacrament with their families.

As you celebrate your First Communion today, remember that God’s love will always be there to comfort you, guide you, and bless you.

Morning prayers & an opportunity to talk about the refurbishment plans

We had 22 parents join classes for prayers across the school today ! Thanks for joining us.

Please note that the prayer mornings will remain on Wednesdays and Fridays for the next few weeks.Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 classes who have specialist lessons on a Wednesday morning, will still be open for morning prayers on a Wednesday. Please collect a visitors lanyard and record your name in the front or the back yard on the way into the classrooms.

There is a display in the main corridor showing the refurbishment plans. This morning, I chatted with one parent before morning prayers about the plans. When you drop your children off, please feel free to come and view the plans in the corridor near the front portico over the next few weeks. I will make myself available to talk to you on Wednesday and Friday mornings or at pick up time on those days and answer any questions you may have.

Next week we will recognise National Reconciliation Week at school.

THANK YOU

Special thanks to the wonderful P&F team who coordinated and ran the cake stall and sausage sizzle on Election Day. $3600 was raised towards the Michelle Barclay memorial running track which is being installed in the back yard in readiness for the 2023 school year.

You can read more details from the P&F in the notices below.

Election Day Cake Stall  & Sausage Sizzle - thank you for your support
A huge thank you to everyone that contributed to the success of the Election Day Cake Stall & Sausage Sizzle. Whether you baked delicious treats, assisted in the running of either stall or supported the fundraiser by making a purchase, we thank you!  The BBQ worked extra hard with 770 sausages sold and  a collective profit of $3600 for the day.  We could not have achieved this fantastic outcome without the support of our amazing families and wonderful community. All our fundraising efforts this year are going toward the Michelle Barclay memorial running track to be installed at the school.
A special thank you to Christie Alexander for all your hard work and overseeing the event from start to finish.

Announcing a change to GEKA identity:  Welcome to Glen Education

St Patrick's is proud to be opening a Glen Education kindergarten on our school site !
Glen Education, formally known as the Glen Eira Kindergarten Association (or GEKA), is a funded, not-for-profit Early Years Management (EYM) organisation based in Melbourne.

Glen Education began operations in 2012, after a group of four parents, all on their kindergarten’s Committee of Management, came together in 2011, in pursuit of a better way to manage and sustain quality early years services. Originating in the City of Glen Eira, the Glen Eira Kindergarten Association was formed.

Since then, our scope has evolved beyond Glen Eira, to manage an expanded number of kindergartens, in Monash, Kingston and Bayside, and to deliver the provision of holiday care, parent education, inclusion and education support and the delivery of professional development.

Glen Education managed by a skills-based, professional executive management team, and governed by a skills-based Board. We are justifiably proud of the reputation and recognition we have gained for service quality above the National Standard, innovation, community engagement and operational performance.

Our historical roots are grounded in the belief that our purpose is to deliver high quality service provision and responsiveness to the community, enabled by exceptional leadership and management. We are committed to being an employer of choice and the ongoing development of our people. Our Vision is to be the leading provider of innovative, professional, and inclusive early years education that delivers excellence in learning.

Community Update #2.5

 Year 5 Reconciliation

Congratulations to our Year 5 students for making their First Reconciliation on Tuesday evening.

It was a very special occasion with families joining the children. Thanks to Father Siby for visiting the Year 5 children and answering many questions in preparation for the children making their First Eucharist very soon.

The Year 5 children will be presented with their First Reconciliation certificates on Monday morning at assembly. Parents are welcome to join us.

Loving God help us to teach our children that you love us totally and unconditionally. Help us to encourage our children to grow in love and to learn how to say sorry, knowing that you always forgive. Give us the courage to pray with our children and to share our faith with them as we journey together.

Morning Prayers

It was wonderful having such a great turnout to prayers this morning. We had 30 parents join classes for prayers across the school today.

Please note that the prayer mornings will remain on Wednesdays and Fridays for the next few weeks.

Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 classes who have specialist lessons on a Wednesday morning, will still be open for morning prayers on a Wednesday.

Please collect a visitors lanyard and record your name on the way into the classrooms.

Come along and join your children and have a chance to see the classrooms, the children and their teachers in action.

Important Safety Message

This is a reminder to families that our school grounds open at 8:40am.

Please understand that we have never opened up St Patrick's school earlier than 8:40am. Prior to the pandemic our grounds were open and supervised from 8:40am.

Currently, there are a number of students waiting outside the gates prior to 8:40am. This is a safety concern for the children and pedestrians alike.

Please ensure your children do not arrive until 8:40am when they can enter the school grounds and then go straight into classrooms.

The main adjustment that we made from a safety perspective, is to allow the children to enter directly into the classrooms from 8:45am as per Community Update #2.2. This is instead of lining up in the playground in the mornings.

Coming directly inside, allows time for the children to unpack their bags, interact with peers and their teacher in a warm, safe, calm and comfortable space in the morning.

The children can arrive up until 8:55am ready to start the day.

Parents are welcome to come into the grounds in the morning from 8:40am and again in the afternoon. It's lovely to see so many of your interacting with each other in the afternoons when you pick up your children.

Teachers will come outside when classes are dismissed in the afternoon at 3:25pm.

If you have any messages for the teachers in the morning, please email the teachers directly or leave a message for them at the office.

As always, please contact Liz Hills or Jenny Hawkins directly with any questions or concerns.

Enter the grounds from any school gate

For ease of access for families, we now welcome the children and families to enter and exit the grounds through any of the school gates (apart from the staff car park gate).

Prep families may wish to enter through the front yard and walk through the side gates around to the back yard to go into their classrooms.

The class entry point remain the same.

Shortage of relieving teachers

Many of you will be aware of the shortage of teaching staff across the country.

Please be aware that on the rare occasion we may have to split up a class and send the children to work in small groups in other classrooms if we haven't got a relief teacher to cover the class.

Parents & Friends Notices

Election Day tomorrow! Cake Stall Donations & Sausage Sizzle
Hopefully everyone has found a favourite recipe to fill their provided cake plates! We are looking forward to seeing all the different contributions at the school on Friday afternoon at 3:15 (preferred) or delivered to the cake stall on Saturday before midday.

Thank you to those that have put your names down to help with running the BBQ and cake stall. It's a fun couple of hours meeting other parents and we know that your time is precious.  We hope to see everyone as you cast your votes on Saturday, or please drop down and support the BBQ and sausage sizzle. A huge thank you to Christie & Jodie and their team of helpers for coordinating the plates to be sent home with the children and to the parishioners.

Please encourage your family, friends or neighbours to vote at St Patricks & buy a sausage and treat.

Social Events
We are busy working on social events for children and also our school community for June. We will let you know when we can confirm details.

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD) On School Students with Disability

What is the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data?

Schools must now complete the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with  Disability (NCCD) every year. It counts the number of students who receive additional adjustments  or “help” at school because of a disability. The NCCD helps governments plan for the needs of  students with disability.

You can access further details about the NCCD at this link.

Community Update # 2.4

Welcome back into the classrooms for morning prayers

From next week, we are thrilled to be welcoming parents and carers back to the classrooms for morning prayers on Wednesday and Friday mornings.

Please collect a visitor's lanyard from the tables either in the front yard or back yard and then enter the school at 8:55am on the second bell. This allows the children time to unpack and settle into their classrooms before parents enter the prayer space. Year 6 leaders will be available to take you to classrooms if you are unsure where to go. The prayer session will take approximately 10 minutes.

We are looking forward to having you back in the classroom with the students again.

South East Principal Network Zone Conference - Building School Culture

This week, I was invited to join my principal colleagues in the South East Principal Network Zone for a professional learning conference. We are fortunate that the international facilitators, Mary and Lab Wilson, who have worked with our staff at St Patrick's as part of our Schools That Deliver professional learning since 2018, were able to facilitate the conference with principals from Catholic schools within our zone.
The zone work is focussed on developing school culture and the aspects of this that are important to our local context.
Mary and Lab arrived in the country on Tuesday and came straight from the airport to our school. They spent some time visiting the classrooms and observing Peer Support groups in action. Mary and Lab commented on the way every student was engaged and on task during Peer Support and they were impressed with the way the Year 6 leaders facilitated the groups. Then we finalised the plans for the staff professional learning day with Mary and Lab this coming Monday. After that, I drove Mary and Lab to the conference at Flinders, where the principals came together for 3 interactive and collaborative days of rich learning.

School Closure Day Monday 16 May

This is a reminder that the school is closed on Monday. Team Kids is available if required.
Mary and Lab Wilson will facilitate the professional learning day with all of the staff on Monday.
We will be reviewing and recognising the achievements of our teams of staff as part of our Annual Action Plan goals and draft our next steps going forward. We will analyse our vision feedback and ensure that the School Improvement Plan continues to align with the school vision and values.

Curriculum Update - Writing

We are delighted to have the children back at school, with very few unwell. As we approach mid-term, our goal going forward is to ensure rigorous coverage of the curriculum, so that students are accessing the mandated curriculum and no child is falling behind.
We have LSO (Learning Support Officers) supporting every year level, and differentiation in all classes. At staff meetings we have further unpacked the Victorian Curriculum, focusing initially on writing, monitoring childrens’ progress and measuring growth.
Consequently, children may bring home writing to edit, proof-read and revise. Teachers will also encourage the children to share writing pieces that they are particularly proud of. Parental assistance should not be required, but your support is always welcome.

Please feel free to contact Liz Hills to discuss any concerns.
