Week 7, Term 4, 2018

Principal News from Jenny Hawkins
Advent
Advent is the season of new beginnings. A new liturgical year begins on the First Sunday of Advent and it beckons to us with images of transformation and hope. It is the season of the impossible becoming possible. Week by week, candles are lit on the Advent wreath signifying our longing for the light of Christ, as the time of his birth draws near.
At school we will celebrate Advent with the children. You are welcome to join us in the church for the four Advent liturgies on the following days from 2:30 - 3:00pm:
Monday 3 Dec Week 1 Advent
Friday 7 Dec Week 2 Advent
Friday 14 Dec Week 3 Advent
Mon 17 Dec Week 4 Advent
Confirmation Dates 2019
We have just received notification from the Archdiocese for Confirmation for 2019. These dates are allocated to all schools. Often families like to know these dates in advance. The Sacrament of Confirmation for our Year 6's will be Wednesday 23 & Thursday 24 October at 7pm.

Mini Market Donation
Thank you to the Yr 5 & 6 students who worked hard to run the Mini Market activities last Friday. $1500 was raised for St Vincent de Paul and for Catholic Missions. Thanks to all families for your contributions.
At the start of the week, we shared the news about the very sad passing of Robert Gordon. After speaking to the family, they were agreeable to a portion of the funds being donated to them to recognise a Catholic Mission close to home. Often we look abroad to communities in need and overlook the needs right in front of us.
Lisa Gordon sends her heartfelt thanks to the PATCARE team of parents and families in the community who are coordinating meals and gardening support for the family in the coming weeks. You can understand more about the PATCARE Parents and Friends initiative by going to this link or contact Paula Sanders 0418300936 to offer your help.

RSL Project Recognition
Congratulation to  Yr 6 leader Will Dickson who was awarded a scholarship by the Hon. Kelly O’Dwyer for his “Drip Gun” model. This was presented at a special Remembrance Day ceremony. It was noted that he standard of entries by all of the St. Pat’s children was of a very high standard. Many thanks to Matt Hale for attending with the children.

OUTSTANDING Maths Results Years 2-6 2018
Recently we shared with you St Patrick’s outstanding results in all areas assessed through NAPLAN, as well as our exceptional comprehension results. We are delighted that these results are matched and surpassed by the attached results for maths in 2018. The following table highlights the percentage of students at each year level operating one year or more above the expected standard in maths. Typically, 25% of students in a cohort operate at this level. In every Year level St Patrick’s results are more than double that expected benchmark.

Our new collaborative planning model for 2019 which includes additional input from Liz Hills our Deputy Principal and Kerryn Oliver, Learning diversity Leader, across all planning teams and classrooms, will have further accelerated impact and enhanced learning opportunities for every student at St Pat's.

Transition Sessions and Staff Update for 2019
On Monday, in the first of three transition sessions, our children will meet their teachers as they join classes for 2019. Fortunately, our new teachers will all be available to come to at least one of the transition sessions. A notice will come home with the children on Monday with the name of their teacher. These are the transition dates:
Monday 26 Nov 3:00-3:30
Friday 7 Dec 10:30-11:15
Tuesday 11 Dec 10:00-12:00
With Kim Wilson newly married, the daily commute has unfortunately proven too much. We wish Kim well as a classroom teacher, closer to home at St Joseph's, Chelsea and thank her for her valued contribution to St Pat's.
We are pleased to announce the appointment of Maddy Kappler. Maddy is a high academic achiever from the Australian Catholic University who brings rich and diverse experiences from abroad. These include intensive studies in the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing, Native American Studies at Fort Lewis College in Colorado and volunteer teaching in Cambodia. We look forward to Maddy joining our teaching team as we continue to engage all learners to ensure they leave St Patrick’s self motivated and ready to make a positive impact on their world (taken from our St Pat's vision narrative).

New Hall Kitchen
Take your last look at a "before" photo of the kitchen. On Monday, work will commence on the new kitchen. During the 2 week period, Team Kids will use our Staff Room to prepare food before the new kitchen is operational. Finally !!!

State Election
Tomorrow St Patrick's school hall will become a voting venue for the State Election. Thanks to Alicia Cerreto and the Year 4 class reps for organising the cake stall for Election Day this Saturday.  If you could assist by baking for the stall - that would be great! Please drop your baked goods off at school pick up, on Friday, 23rd November in the Staff Room. Alternatively, on the Saturday when you come to vote. Similar to the Fete NO nuts, NO fresh cream and please label all ingredients. Please support this event with your cakes and attendance.
